Saturday - Day 3 (part 2)

Arriving in Mackinaw City, Michigan we went straight to supper at Scalawags Whitefish & Chips. Scalawags was quite busy and although it took only a few minutes to place our order and we were able to then find a table right away, other orders placed ahead of ours made our food take about 50 minutes.

After over a year, it was good having our first whitefish and perch of the trip.

As we walked past the Seasons of Mackinaw store to Scalawags, Linda spotted a 3 foot tall carved wooden owl outside the shop. We waited until the end of our trip to buy it, but it ended up coming back to Kansas with us and now sits on our deck.

We checked in at the independently owned Riviera Motel, which is only a block from the foot of the Mackinac Bridge. During the course of our week at the Straits, we spent many hours on our balcony watching the bridge and water, while also on our computers or talking, always with a camera beside us to catch a freighter passing under the bridge or whatever else caught our eyes.

There must be tens of thousands of photos of people pretending to hold up the Mackinac Bridge.

Saturday nights in July and August there are fireworks in St. Ignace, the Upper Peninsula community near the north end of the Mackinac Bridge. We have previously watched the fireworks across the Straits of Mackinac from our motel, but I am often asked questions about watching them, so we crossed the bridge to see them tonight from St. Ignace.

I wasn't sure exactly where the fireworks launched from, but we saw people waiting to watch them from Kiwanis Beach. We parked in the lot at the (closed for the day) Indian Village and took lawn chairs over to the Kiwanis park to find a good spot.

There were many mosquitos near the water at dark and we wished I had remembered to bring repellent. I killed a number of of them which landed on me, but strangely no itchy bumps developed following the night.

The fireworks were launched into East Moran Bay from a spot on the shore by BC Pizza, a few blocks to our right and we had a great view. The display was quite nice, with a fun finale. This location was great, but the view would have also been good anywhere along the waterfront from here south to American Legion Park.
