Waugoshance Lighthouse near
Wilderness State Park was built in 1851 and sits at the western end of
Michigan's Straits of Mackinac. The light replaced a lightship which was
stationed on Waugoshance Shoal in 1832. Waugoshance Light had red and white
horizontal stripes when it was in operation.
The light operated until 1912, when it was replaced by
White Shoals Lighthouse. The US government retained ownership of Waugoshance
Lighthouse and it was leased to the Navy during World War 2, when it was
used as a bombing target by early drone aircraft.
In 1998 the Waugoshance Lighthouse Preservation Society
was formed to preserve and restore this endangered light. More recently,
ownership of the light was transferred from the General Services Administration
to the Society.
