Tuesday - Day 5 This was the second day this trip where we had nothing on a schedule and we had another leisurely start. Today we explored the North Shore. Other than pulling over to take pictures, our first stop of the day was at Kilauea Point Lighthouse. It is closed to the public on Tuesdays, but we took pictures from the base of Point. It was very scenic with the cliffs, greenery, blue sea, lighthouse and large birds soaring and roosting in trees. We had spotted some nene, also known as the Hawaiian goose, on the way to the point, and stopped to photograph them on the way back into Kilauea. They are the official state bird of Hawaii and only about 2,500 exist today.
After a brief stop to check out the shops at Kong Lung Historic Market Center, we continued northwest on Kuhio Hwy to Hanalei Valley Lookout, where we could look out over the taro fields. From here on, the road became slower and many of the bridges, including the historic Hanalei Bridge, were one lane so that vehicles had to take their turns crossing. We stopped for lunch at Tahiti Nui in Hanalei where I had a Oh So Ono Roll (Panko & Furikake crusted local catch drizzled with Wasabi Soy Aioli & Ponzu Sauce, White Rice) and Linda had the Tiki Man (a $25 10" pizza with Kalua Pig, Pepperoni, Chicken, Garlic, Red Onion, Mushrooms, Smoky BBQ Sauce, Pineapple Chunks & Fresh Cilantro). I liked both, well at least the center of the pizza where the toppings were, but there was a lot of untopped crust around the edges. I enjoyed the Refreshing Ginger Spice cocktail of muddled lemons, Ketel One Lemon Vodka, Ginger Domaine Canton Liquor & cayenne.
