Coconut Corner Sunday - Day 3 (part 2) Arriving back at Highway 50, we decided to return to Waimea to have lunch at Coconut Corner, next door to the The Shrimp Station where we dined the day before. It was good, but I really would have enjoyed a second meal at The Shrimp Station even more. We had house fried chicken (deep fried bits of chicken), grilled shell on shrimp, and banana lumpia - a Filipino dish with local apple banana rolled in rice paper and deep fried. Good, but I think it would be better with a topping or dip. After lunch we made a brief stop at Russian Fort Elizabeth, the ruins of a fort built in 1817 by the Russian-American Company. The 17 acre property is overgrown and really just piles of rocks.
We drove on to Snorkle Bob's in Koloa. We didn't have an appointment and the sign said they would be back at 3PM, so we waited until the man returned, to fit us with masks, snorkels and fins. Their "Rx Mask" with nearsighted correction worked well with Linda, but my vision was better without correction. The person in the shop confirmed that nearby Poipu Beach would be a good choice for inexperienced snorkelers, so we went there. I was a little uncomfortable leaving our things and car keys on the beach while we snorkeled, so we chose a spot on the beach next to the lifeguard station. The water bottom was mostly rock and coral and it stayed shallow for some distance. I was fine with the snorkel and saw several species of fish, but had trouble keeping the fins on. Between the current, the rocks, and the fins, I was ready to quit after 15-20 minutes and returned to shore where I could guard our property. Linda had less trouble and snorkeled longer. Back on shore, a senior ukulele group had gathered under a pavilion and we enjoyed listening to about 20 ukuleles plus guitars and maracas.
After dropping off the snorkeling gear, we explored a little of Old Koloa Town a few miles away where we sampled several products at Kauai Gourmet Nuts who specializes in sweet kettle roasted macadamia nuts, almonds, pecans, and savory nut mixes. We got several to enjoy during the trip. I had been thinking of having supper at a restaurant close to our hotel, but since Kenji Burger was a few doors away, was one of the restaurants I had researched, and had tables, we went there for supper. Kenji Burger has good reviews and one of their other locations on Kauai was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives about 4 years ago. I haven't seen Season 30, Episode 10 "From Australian to Asian" (and really should, since it also includes a bakery near me), but the Japanese Sushi Burrito (spicy ahi tuna, avocado spicy aioli, shrimp tempura, cucumber, sushi rice, nori, unagi sauce) and Misoyaki Fish Sandwich (miso marinated black cod on a taro brioche bun, w/ amazu salad & pickled ginger) looked good and those were what we ordered. Linda enjoyed her sandwich, I liked the sushi a lot, but it wasn't a very large meal.
On the way back to our motel we made a stop for ice cream at Tropical Dreams in Kauai Village Shopping Center. Their ice cream is made on another Island and brought to this location. I enjoyed their macadamia ice cream much more than the shave ice earlier in the trip.
