Thursday - day 7 After lunch, we crossed the parking lot to the Maui Ocean Center, which I liked, but there was much less to it than I expected. The aquarium is billed as world class, "one of the Top 10 Aquariums in the World," and that raised my expectations to more than it could meet. Taking our time, it took only about an hour and a half and I would have planned more for the afternoon. Actually, with just a couple of days on Maui, I wouldn't have included the aquarium at all. Perhaps if we were spending 10 or more days on this island.
Before returning to Sugar Beach Resort, we stopped for a brief visit to Kalepolepo Beach Park and adjacent Koieie Fishpond, where I had been told we might see more sea turtles, but had no luck. The wall of the pond (shown protecting the beach in the photo below) is believed to have been built between 1400 and 1500 AD. Kalepolepo is a nice sheltered beach.
Returning to Sugar Beach Resort, we spent a little time walking the beach and wading, but the beach is pretty narrow and some of the wave were coming up all the way to the grass. We followed our walk with a swim at the resort pool before getting ready for supper.
We had a 5:45 reservation for Honu Oceanside in Lahaina and had a table with a view of the sunset. I was getting a little tired of Mai Tais and had a Fellon (Casamigos Reposado Tequila, Prickly Pear, Lime Juice, Agave, Mezcal Spritz). Linda had the cioppino for dinner. The stew made from crab, fish, shrimp and clams was quite good and went well with our half order of ahi bruchetta. I was debating between the grilled octopus and the fish & chips, and chose the fish & chips on the strong endorsement from our server, who said the house made tartar sauce was great. I was underwhelmed with the fish and had much better the next day. We shared a butterscotch pot de creme pudding for dessert. It was pricey at $15 dollars, but quite good. I particularly liked the butterscotch and mac nut brittle.
