The Basilica of St. Mary of Health (Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute)
Thursday continued
Returning to San Marco, we spent about an hour touring
the Museo Correr and attached Museo Archeologico Nazionale. They were OK,
but not where we wanted to spend much of our last few hours in Venice.
Much as I had loved taking photos of the church of San
Giorgio Maggiore in the distance all week, Linda had felt the same way
about the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute which is across the
Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro Sestieri. The baroque church was built by
the Republic of Venice in the 1630s in hopes of deliverance from a plague.
The interior is octagonal with eight radiating chapels on the outer
row - I love this marble floor
The high altar with the holy icon of Panagia Mesopantitisa
Most photos of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute include the
low Punta della Dogana in the foreground -
the former Venice customs house is now a contemporary art museum
